Soy un enganchado del Camino de Santiago. No sabría deciros muy bien por qué.
Hoy quiero mostraros una etapa que caminé en el año 2014. No ha sido la etapa mas bonita del Camino, pero si me resultó la mas sobrecogedora e inquietante.

Entre el puente de Órbigo y Astorga la etapa discurre por el Páramo leonés, por una llanura kilométrica casi desértica. El Páramo leones es una comarca que se encuentra en la mitad sur de la provincia de León. Se haya justo al sur de la cordillera Cantábrica y está entre las vegas y confluencias de los ríos Esla y el Órbigo.
Destaca por ser una de las zonas mas llana de la península ibérica. Se generó por depósitos fluviales hace millones de años y se ha conservado casi sin erosión hasta
nuestros días. En esta zona, había hace millones de años grandes ríos que arrastraron una enorme cantidad de materiales que, con el tiempo, dieron lugar a esta zona de gran sedimentación en la cuenca del rio Duero.
Between the bridge of Órbigo and Astorga the stage runs through the Páramo leonés, through a kilometric desert almost flat. El Páramo leones is a region that is located in the southern half of the province of León. It is just south of the Cantabrian mountain range and is between the fertile valleys and confluences of the Esla and Órbigo rivers.
It stands out for being one of the flattest areas of the Iberian Peninsula. It was generated by fluvial deposits millions of years ago and has been preserved almost without erosion until our days. En la actualidad los ríos han ido habiendo sus cauces, pero han dejado intactas largas llanuras y cerros pequeños. Como no falta el agua, Realizan agricultura intensiva.
En los últimos años, se ha producido un cultivo intensivo de maíz , llegando incluso a variar el clima de esta zona haciéndose mas húmedo en verano.

En el Puente de Órbigo sucedió un gran torneo medieval cuya fama ha llegado hasta nuestras días. tengo intención de hacer un post únicamente destinado a este encuentro de caballeros.

Para mi suponía un reto caminar en solitario solo por esta llanura infinita y seca. Me supuso un reto. En muchas ocasiones me preguntaba si no estaba loco y para que hago esto. Pero estaba contento. Lo hacía, un poco como superación personal y también porque me encanta sentirme integrado con la naturaleza.

En pocas ocasiones uno puede disfrutar del encanto de la naturaleza simplemente. Podemos oir los sonidos del campo, los pájaros, la brisa, nuestras pisadas…

Pocos deciden hacer esta etapa. Debe ser bastante horrible realizarla en verano. Solo sería posible madrugando muchísimo para terminarla antes de las 9-10.

Hay que ir bien pertrechados porque no hay muchos lugares donde surtirse de agua o avituallamiento.

Al fondo un grupo de árboles. Al entrar, observé que el suelo de esta arboleda estaba cubierto de un manto de pelusas blancas, como si fuera nieve.

Apareció un pequeño pueblito donde puede descansar y tomar una cerveza sin alcohol.

En las praderas, las hojas de los cultivos se cimbreaban en forma de ondas que recorrían largos recorridos. La suave brisa mueve estas hojas todas juntas en una u otra dirección, dando la sensación de un oleaje. Nunca antes había tenido ocasión de observar esto antes. En un lago las ondulaciones del agua provocadas por la brisa si estamos acostumbrados a verlas, pero no en llanuras de cultivos kilométricas.

Como un espejismo, cuando la llanura empezada a brillar demasiado obligándome a cerrar mucho los ojos, vi un punto al final de la recta.
Según iba a cercándome, no sabía que podía ser.

El sol apretaba fuerte y no había ninguna sombra posible donde guarecerse. En esta situación, solo se podía bajar la cabeza y caminar hacia adelante sino quería quedarme allí tirado para siempre. Probablemente los móviles no tendrían allí cobertura para pedir ayuda. No había forma de solicitar a un taxista que llegara hasta allí por pistas intransitables. Así que solo quedaba seguir para adelante sin parar.
Según me fui acercando aquel punto oscuro de la cima del cerro fue creciendo y, para mi sorpresa me pareció que era una sombrilla.
Si era una ¡Una sombra!
¡Qué suerte!
Aquel lugar estaba situado en un punto en el que si uno no puede descansar posiblemente lo pase muy mal, porque el sol quemaba ya con mucha fuerza.
En efecto, allí había un pequeño tenderete formado por palos y lonas, creando un espacio de sombra formando una especie de jaima y algunos peregrinos estaban allí sentados en silencio.
The sun was strong and there was no possible shade to shelter. In this situation, I could only lower my head and walk forward if I did not want to stay there forever. Probably the mobiles would not have there coverage to ask for help. There was no way to ask a taxi driver to get there on impassable roads. So all that remained was to continue forward without stopping.

That place was located at a point where if you can not rest, you may have a very bad time, because the sun was already burning very hard.
In fact, there was a small stall made up of sticks and canvas, creating a space of shade forming a kind of * jaima * and some pilgrims were sitting there in silence.
Me recibió un chico solamente vestido con un pantalón de bañador e indicándome con una sonrisa que me sentaras y descansara. Me dijo que podía utilizar y tomar lo que quisiera que todo aquello era gratis. Me animó a que comiera y bebiera lo que quisiera. En el carromato había frutas, refrescos, agua y sombra.

Me di cuenta que lo que estaba viendo era memorable. Me preguntaba ¿qué demonios hago yo aquí?, peor también ¿qué demonios hace este tipo aquí?
I took off my backpack and hydrated myself, glancing sideways at a couple of young pilgrims who were there too, tired, and silent. How many kilometers would they have walked out of civilization, in this desert?
I realized that what I was seeing was memorable. I was wondering what the hell am I doing here? But also what the hell is this guy doing here?
En el carrito verde decorado y coqueto, había escrita una frase: “La esencia es la presencia”.

Muchas veces me he preguntado que querría decir con esto. Para este eremita esa frase era el motivo por el que él estaba allí en pelotas, sin nada, atendiendo al peregrino. Era su motivo de ser y le hacía feliz.
¿Tal vez quería decir que lo esencial es el presente? ¿Vive la vida y disfruta del presente? No sé. O, tal vez, reivindicaba a que gracias a estar él presente en este punto nos podía ayudar en una zona tan dura.

Era un pirado. Un bendito pirado. Un pirado que se había dado cuenta que en ese punto era importante un lugar de ayuda al peregrino. Le pregunté, cuanto tiempo estaba allí y me dijo que allí vivía todo el año.
Me pareció un sitio horrible para vivir, donde puede hacer mucho frio y mucho calor. Por la noche se puede estar por debajo o muy cerca de los cero grados y en el invierno toda esta llanura estaría cubierta por la nieve. Mientras que en verano aquello es un desierto.
Detrás de la jaima hay una construcción de adobe, que probablemente en el pasado seria para el ganado o cochiqueras y allí puede ver que entraba y salía una joven. Desde luego, como decía el torrero, “hay gente pa tó” pensé. ¿qué necesidad tenía de vivir allí?
¿Por qué estas dos personas han elegido dejar todo y ayudar al peregrino?

El caso es que se le veía feliz. Charlaba con todos los que se paraban y les mostraba una sonrisa.
Me pregunté por la banalidad de la vida y el ansia de posesiones. Mientras, existen estos eremitas que viven mal, pero alegres, con lo puesto y renunciando a todo, pero siendo muy útiles en un punto desloado y deshabitado de una llanura kilométrica desértica.

El cocido maragato se come al revés. Es decir, primero se sirven las carnes. Luego, los garbanzos y verdura. Lo último el caldo que, aunque crees que no podrás con él, entra muy bien. De postre, lo clásico son las natillas.
