An image I generated with AI
Backstory
There are some stories and many upset customers right now, as folks discover that Google has been installing local AI models for compatible machines and when users first use chrome AI tools.
A 4 GB Gemini nano model , since most folks lack logic and are clueless about the Tech and AI I figured I give y'all an actual run down.
Lots of misleading information out there, like you can't even delete it it just install itself...
Delete a file and disable a feature is not the same thing, some folks removed the model file but chrome just downloads it again, that may seem nefarious to someone not technical, but that's not necessarily the case.
You have to turn the feature off in chrome settin not just delete the file 🤣
Why
Why is Google doing this ? To save money naturally.
Running AI models is fairly expensive, and Google is trying to offload the compute to the consumer devices, this Gemini nano model they push on devices is fairly lightweight and can run on a fair bit of devices, it's fairly negligible resources in most cases but at scale those tiny bits of resources add up and it's compute that Google is not paying for.
Practical guide
Here is a breakdown to see if your device is "affected" and how to disable.
- Check for the model:
Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\OptGuideOnDeviceModel
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/OptGuideOnDeviceModel
Linux: ~/.config/google-chrome/OptGuideOnDeviceModel
If you see a ~4 GB weights.bin, that’s the local Gemini Nano model.
- Turn it off properly:
Go to chrome://settings → System → On-device AI (or On-device generative AI).
Toggle it off. This removes the model and disables features like AI scam warnings, page summaries, “help me write,” and AI tab organizing.
Deleting the file alone isn’t a real opt-out; Chrome will just download it again if the feature is still on.
Closing thoughts
Is it shady sure ? But nothing illegal, folks upset that Google just installed it without consent, those folks don't understand how updates or terms of service work.
Google is free to build their app how they see fit (within the law obviously) and you are free to not use their tools, there are many alternatives.
Capitalism is about making profit not sure what folks expect from Google

My inleo subs can have something like 1080 version with sounds included made! and much more for only 5 HBD!
I am a financial advisor ! If you can't take personal responsibility for you investing, I hate to brake it to ya, but you ain't nothing but a sucka, you supposed to lose your shit.
