There are obviously many reasons why people enjoy gaming. Aside from being a fun and engaging pastime, it can also be quite rewarding in terms of Achievements or Trophies earned. However, many gamers will tell you that one of the best things about gaming is how it can transport you to another world and allow you to experience amazing adventures and stories. It’s hard to put into words just how powerful a medium video games can be, but one way in which they really shine is by using music to intensify the experience. This blog post will take a look at some ways that music can enhance your gaming sessions. So, if you’re ready, let’s dive in!

Keeps you focused

Whether you’re playing an intense first-person shooter or a more relaxed puzzle game, having the right music on in the background can really help you to stay focused and in the zone. When you’re trying to achieve something in-game, whether it’s completing a level or taking down a tough boss, it can be easy to lose concentration. However, if you have some great music playing, it can help to keep you motivated and focused on what you’re doing.

Create a sense of atmosphere

One of the most important aspects of any video game is its atmosphere. This is what helps to immerse you in the experience and make you feel like we’re actually there in the game world. Music is a vital part of creating atmosphere and can be used to great effect in games. For example, a horror game will use suspenseful, scary music to make you feel on edge, while an exploration game might use more relaxing tracks to encourage you to take your time and soak up the surroundings.

An atmosphere can also be created by using music to contrast with what’s happening on screen. For example, in a game like Journey, the majority of the time, you’ll be exploring a beautiful and serene desert landscape. A beautiful song like Colin Peterik’s cover of “West Coast” could add to these beautiful moments.

However, during the game’s dramatic moments, an intense and heart-pounding score will start up, completely changing the feel of the game and ramping up the tension.

Make you feel more powerful

In many games, you’ll take on the role of a powerful character who is capable of doing amazing things. Games such as God of War or Devil May Cry are all about making you feel like an unstoppable force as you carve your way through hordes of enemies. Music can play a big part in this by making you feel like you’re the badass character you’re controlling on-screen. For example, the God of War series is known for its epic and empowering orchestral tracks that make you feel like a god as you battle your way through pantheons of gods.

Builds tension and excitement

Whether you’re playing a heart-pounding action game or a slow-paced RPG, music can be used to heighten the tension and excitement levels. In fast-paced games, exciting music can get your blood pumping and get you ready for some intense gaming action. In slower games, meanwhile, suspenseful music can add an extra layer of anticipation and make key moments even more impactful. To see how this is done for yourself, play video poker. It is easy to get started but differs slightly from other top-rated poker games. It combines the rules of standard poker and online slot machines, making it easier to learn than its more traditional counterpart.

Choose to play online or offline – whatever suits you best – and give all the variations a go so that you give yourself a thorough experience. For instance, take video poker on cafe and other sites. While the gameplay is relatively slow, the music helps to add excitement and tension, making it more enjoyable to play. The games have the sole purpose of meeting the expectations of their players, meaning that everything from the quality to the features, variations, rewards, and, of course, the music is thought through carefully.

Helps you to feel more connected to the game

Many gamers find that they form a strong emotional connection with the games they play. Music can be a big part of this, as it can help to create an emotional response in you that makes you feel more connected to the game. For example, if a particular character dies in-game, and their death is accompanied by a sad or poignant piece of music, it can make you feel much more emotionally attached to that character.

Enhances the emotions you feel

As well as building tension and creating an atmosphere, music in games can also be used to enhance the emotions you’re feeling. For example, a tragic scene in a game can be made even more upsetting by adding some sad music, while a triumphant moment can be made even more exciting with some rousing tunes. In this way, music can help you to connect with the characters and events in-game on an emotional level.

Makes it more entertaining

Last but not least, music can simply make gaming more enjoyable and entertaining. When you’re playing a game you love, it’s easy to get lost in the experience and forget about the outside world. However, if you have some great music playing, it can add another layer of enjoyment and help you to appreciate the game you’re playing.

Conclusion

As you can see, music can have a big impact on your gaming experience. It can keep you focused, help to create an atmosphere, build tension and excitement, make you feel more connected to the game, and enhance the emotions you feel. So next time you’re firing up your favorite game, make sure to put on some great music to get the most out of it!

As a musician, one of the things I've learned (and it's even backed by science!) is music also helps you remember certain things better than without. Just like particularly strong emotions make their associated memories easier to recall, music can provide a strong foundation for long-term memory.

When I think back on my early gaming days, I can clearly recall melody loops from games like Zelda, StarCraft, Luigi's Mansion, etc. More recent games like Guild Wars (that main menu orchestral music!), Mass Effect and Ori and the Blind Forest stand out in my memory even if there are other games I played more and/or enjoyed more.

Two thumbs up for music making certain gaming experiences ;)
