Outdoor Ice Skating in Canada?

in #pimplast year

With Christmas just around the corner and the new year following a weeks later, I am starting to look ahead to 2025. Specifically, I'm thinking about any travel I might do. My folks are in their mid-eighties now, so most of my travel time/budget will be down to Arizona to spend time with them, but I would like to plan a side-quest or two next year.

Top on my list is the Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The Rideau Canal Skateway is 4.8 miles (7.8 kilometers) in length, which makes it the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink. It is generally opened from mid January to mid March, the exact date being weather dependent. The canal passes most of the famous tourist spots in the city like the Parliament building & downtown Ottawa.

Skating is free and, weather permitting, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! That means NIGHT SKATING :D

The canal does not open for skating until the ice reaches a thickness of 12 inches (30 cm). There is an ice crew that is constantly monitoring and cleaning up the ice. The canal has over 30 access points with some of those having facilities like restrooms and warming huts.

There are food and drink vendors that set up on the skateway, looks like mostly coffee and warm drinks xD

It takes about ~2 hours to skate the entire 4.8 mile length. This would be awesome, might have to take a cab back though ;)

I don't know if I can make it out this season but I am trying to make it happen. I wonder if @bitcoinman has made it out that far east. I bet @fat-elvis has been to Ottawa, wonder if he's ever hit the canal ice?

Sounds way too cold for me, I gave up ski instruction many long years ago! I'm not sure I could do the first mile on skates!

!LOL

Hahaha, yeah I don't know if I could do the full length either but would be fun to try.

How do you turn a duck in to a singer?

I've been to Ottawa many times. Never skated the canal, but I have taken in Winterlude on the canal. It's awesome, canal lined up with food trucks, ice carving, Maple snow candy.

Maple snow candy!!!! Awesome. When I was a kid in Chicago my mom use to give me a cup to fill with snow then I'd bring it in and she'd pour syrup all over it! I gotta get myself there :D

They pour it on the snow then roll it on a stick!

Magical 😍

Here we are having a green christmas!! All snow is gone 🤣 but i heard that a snowstorm hit the east coast today lol

Green Christmas? In Canada!? World's gone mad xDDD
!pimp

Yep all the snow from last week just melted 🤣 raining in here this morning

Sounds cool, but no way I’d make 4.8 miles.

Yeah., that'd be a push, but I think I could do it in one shot but then it'd be more work than fun.
!pimp

It may be healthy exercise but I'd still take the bus to work.
In Vancouver the Fraser river never gets cold enough to freeze over anyways.

I didn't think of that but yeah, there must be folks that use the skateway as a path to work xD
