Al igual que en muchas de las películas de ciencia ficción la ESA se está planteando la hibernación de los tripulantes de los vuelos espaciales y está estudiando que efectos podría tener esta práctica en los seres humanos, al menos en el reino animal los osos por ejemplo no se ven afectados por el desgaste óseo o muscular.

A efectos de coste sería mucho más barato mantener la tripulación en animación suspendida, no solo por lo que se ahorran en comida y soporte vital para los tripulantes sino por la reducción del tamaño y el peso de estas naves al no tener que tener espacios habilitados para entretenimiento e higiene física y mental de la tripulación.

As interesting as this sounds, it's actually a scary proposition... A lot could go wrong in actual practice!
it is scarier to go to mars and there are thousands of volunteers.
I hope the technology is perfected before use, and more importantly I hope the automated systems to be used in making decisions on behalf of the astronauts when they'll be in hibernation are 100% reliable.
