Surely you had all heard about the theory of six degrees of separation, the theory according to which we could send a package to any part of the world without using any courier company, just delivering it to a known person in our environment who will also do the same and in just six steps the package would have reached its destination.

The first reference made to this theory comes from a 1929 novel called "Chains" by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy. In the sixties of the last century, Stanley Milgram, a professor at Harvard University, set out to test the theory using volunteers to send sixty identical letters with similar indications throughout the United States.

To do this, he sought volunteers in Kansas and Nebraska, whom he ordered to send a letter to a target person in Massachusetts, sending it, as we said, to a known person with the possibility of approaching the target. At the beginning of the 21st century, a group of researchers from Columbia University carried out the same experiment to test the theory of six degrees of separation, but this time through email. After completing the study, they verified that the number of jumps needed on average was close to six, as expected.

Finally, a group of scientists from Israel, Spain, Italy, Russia, Slovenia and Chile carried out new work studying human behavior to check why the package could be sent with so few steps, concluding that this is due to how we build our social networks and the effort involved in maintaining them.

Furthermore, this seems to be independent of the number of inhabitants that populate the Earth if we take into account that, in the twenties of the last century, the number of inhabitants of the Earth did not reach two billion and today we have already exceeded eight billions of souls.
