We did not get World Peace, but we got Labubus

in #pob21 days ago

Can someone explain to me Labubus? I mean, I think I get it, but I do not. Not really. What is this obsession with this hideous doll? Is society falling under some weird spell?

Two months ago my little nieces were telling their mother, my cousin, that they wanted some Labubus. You see, a birthday was around the corner, and I was short on ideas. My wife and I went shopping a few days later, and I remembered the name. But when I saw one, when she saw one, we knew it was not coming home with us.

What is this? It is like a creepy bunny thing. I cannot really put my finger on it, but it certainly looks intentionally twisted. As if someone out there was thinking of ways to make children have nightmares. This, sitting on a shelf in a dark room, hardly seems like a good idea, but alas, people want them.

But listen, lots of things are wrong with the world right now. Conflicts all over the world, divisiveness, broken homes, broken dreams, you name it. But let us not forget: We got Labubus.

Wut?

It might be some sort of self deception at play here. I can imagine, although I certainly do not know if this is true, that there are people out there who feel nothing is right, nothing is working. Maybe they are in an unhappy relationship. Maybe they have a job they hate. Maybe they are considering moving to another country because they fear for their lives.

In the middle of this scene, of this twisted movie plot, their only beam of light, the only good thing they have, is—you ready for this—a rare Labubu. Oh, good lord, all is good then?

I am serious, but I am not.

I think this points to a certain type of rot we are not able to fully recognize. I am not trying to be all preachy here, I am not. Yes, I advocate against stupid, pointless consumerism, but I am an even bigger advocate for freedom. You should be able to buy whatever the hell you want, even if you feel like spending five hundred bucks on a rare Labubu. I just think you are only fooling yourself, but you do you sparky, you do you.

As I am saying all this, I am thinking of something. There is a T-shirt here, one that I am not going to make, but it would be hilarious if someone did.

Sort:

@meno just admit you want your own labubu.

Honestly, this is no different than the crypro-kitties craze, it's basically the same, but in physical format (with lots of fakes going around). I won't say 'all people', but I'm pretty sure that almost all, have something they collect. Once you have some sort of consistent criteria and a series, there can be value assigned. There are personal collections (bottles, bugs), and there are fads (Pokemon, Labubus).

When you juxtapose labubu collecting fad (and throw Pokemon cards in that basket too), next all the global problems, it, of course, looks ridiculous. Why are we obsessing over useless crap while other people are experiencing real hardships?? Unfortunately, sense of scarcity exists in people at every economic level. If you're wealthy, you still feel scarcity, cause someone is going to grab that luxury yacht you been eyeing... it's just human nature, labubus sell because of FOMO.

My favorite part about the Labubu, is the satanic panic that is happening over this doll. There are adults who legit think that Labubus are the manifestation of the Mesopotamian demon Pazuzu. And they are buying them just to destroy them. So who is crazier?

Machines acting mechanically.

I honestly don't get the hype around labubus because what's that look?

The doll's appearance is definitely not something I'd want to wake up next to. I will say this though: the kids who own labubus must be pretty brave because they're drawn to dolls way scarier than anything I faced while battling nightmares as a kid, even without me having dolls around.

I think if someone gifts me one, i would "pretend" to be grateful and I would try to sell it on ebay or something.

oooh no... damn Labubu..please no :D

leave it to the Simpsons! hahah

“I have to confess… these creepy plush toys give me the chills! 😅 Speaking on behalf of the generation that watched Teletubbies, haha, I know it's like a same thing but different year.

I don't remember this level of obsession over the Teletubbies... lines of people, insane prices on ebay...

lol

Yeah, you’re right, but I still think if everything had been as easily available back then as it is now, with kids being freer to demand things at all costs and parents allowing it, we’d probably have ended up with a whole collection. xD I’m just trying my best to justify today’s kids and blame the whole system around them. :D

we knew it was not coming home with us.

Hahahaha. U r a man of culture.

We did not get World Peace, but at least we got Labubus… Thanks Donnie.

Don't complain if u get a head injury later.

Lool that's a great status prompt. 😄

It's quite crazy. The rage has thankfully died down over here. But when it was going strongly?

A doll worth close to a million...
Looking like this😂😭

No reasonable explanation for this, right?
