On the train, while working in the backyard, in the office, almost anywhere I can, I listen to podcasts. My interests cover business topics such as management, economics, social trends and technology podcasts. Here are my five recommended podcasts that I found most valuable this week.
1. Bob Johansen on the New Leadership Literacies - Inst of the Future
Podcast Rating - 3.5/5. (24 mins - Needs some concentration, new concepts) Anything coming out of the Institute of the Future gets my attention for its path-breaking and rigorous method they follow in predicting the future. Leadership in shape-shifting organisations required for the VUCA (Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world will be very different from formulaic and "old school" we currently follow. The leadership literacies required are not so much "role-based" as they are required to be distributed across all levels in the organisation.

2. The Age of the Algorithm - 99% Invisible
Podcast Rating - 4/5 (24 mins - Easy listening. New concepts) Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is in the news for its potential to replace human jobs. In this podcast, Cathy O’Neil, a data scientist and author cautions us that poorly designed algorithms can negatively impact our life and society as they may contain the biases of the programmer which may be hard to detect as algorithms are complex and inscrutable. A timely warning as the use of algorithms becomes widespread.
Best for: Anyone interested in technology and its application in society and work.
3. How to Fix Team Creep - HBR Ideacast
Podcast Rating - 3.5/5 (24 mins - Needs some concentration, new concept). This podcast covers what should be obvious but isn't i.e. the downsides of matrix and project based work where people are stretched across multiple projects increasing stress and decreasing productivity. Mark Mortensen identifies the issues and possible solutions. A topic that will keep you thinking next time you go back to the workplace.

4. Double Entry Bookkeeping - 50 Things That Made the Modern Economy
Podcast Rating - 3.5/5 (9 mins - Easy Listening but you need to be curious). A short history of the foundational element of modern accounting which made Finance a critical part of organisations and the economy. A fascinating episode about "whoever thought about it first ?".

5. This Ad's For You - NPR
Podcast Rating - 4/5 (25 mins - Easy listening). Fascinating first-hand account of a man who worked his way up in an industry despite odds. Tom pioneered a more nuanced approach to marketing at a time "one-size-fits-all marketing" was the norm.
Best for: Anyone interested in Advertising, Innovation and Leadership
