FAITH IN CHARMS

Yoruba warriors, like many others,
Believe in the spirits of their fore fathers,
In God as well as the gods and charm,
To protect them from evil and harm;
And it was to these they entrusted their lives
During past events of war and strife.

Worn around their waists and arms,
Were several colorful charms,
And they felt confident and secured,
And certain their safety were assured,
They became foolishly adventurous
And took risks that could be disastrous.

But they survived the bullets and the war,
When many like them were killed by the foe;
Perhaps their gods and charms were stronger,
Or perhaps, they were destined to live longer
By fate and not by protection from danger
By the lifeless charms that weren't capable of anger.
