"Blowing Amid the Gloaming" ~ a Poem by Duncan Cary Palmer

in #poetry7 years ago

"The dandelion's pallid tube
Astonishes the grass,
And winter instantly becomes
An infinite alas."

- Emily Dickinson -

I'm once more responding to @jayna's 50 word challenge...

This time, with a 50 word bit of ephemeral fantasy, a dollop of poetic fiction.

NOTE: Please visit @jayna's 50 word story writing challenge here for the background of what drew this particular work of fiction out of me.

By the way, there were just too many beautifully appropriate images to choose from for this piece... I so appreciate the photographers who have shared them!

And, thank you again, Jayna!

How powerful is your imagination?

Could you possibly imagine yourself as a sentient dandelion seed?

Prepare your mind...

Blowing Amid the Gloaming

by Duncan Cary Palmer

Blowing amid the gloaming,
demonstrating that freedom is king,
we dandelion seeds come soaring,
swirling on windborne wings.

Tiny, fleecy prophets,
emerging like magic in spring,
our bright yellow spawn
gaily decorate lawns,
springing up in the dawns,
brewing wine for the fauns.

What joy to be free, living things!

Poetry has this feature, identified time ago by Freud, of leading us through so many paths: "Everywhere I go I find a poet has been there before me."

Your poem, through that line about freedom, and the beuatiful descriptions, made me remember Tennyson's poem. And the fact that if we could understand a flower, we would know what the man and the world is.

Thank you so much for your very kind words...

Great poetry @creatr I hope your poetry will be selected.

The humble Dandelion - filled with amazing health benefits!!

Have you written about them? ;)

Hahaha noo I haven't but I am researching herbs and their benefits a little at the moment so when I know more maybe I will :)

You go, girl! ;)

A simple flower brining so much joy.. or sneezes:-)

Now you have me thinking of Paul Simon's "Alergies..." ;)

Very nicely done @creatr. a poem to the dandelion. That is in a way spiritual. We do not normally think of this flower/weed as special. Yet you have beautifully exalted it The least of these are the greatest. Thanks for the moment.

Hey, Troy, thanks for your sweet reactions... :D

Really well done, you brough the humble little dandelion to life with great aplomb..

Thank you so much! :D

What joy to be free, living things!

Absolutely true.

Not too many people use "gloaming" anymore. I first heard it used watching the Walton's and Will Geer (Grandpa Walton) used it. Nice work.

Thanks. I'm a bit of a philologist... ;)

Really beautiful, I like the last few lines, they have good rhythm while reading it out loud, rolls out of tongue easily ^^

Thank you!

I was hoping it would be read out loud... :D

the weeds belong - they're simply unloved flowers, beautiful in their own way

Yes! :D

Beautifully done @creatr. It all flows off the tongue so well, and I can see all those blowing puffball seeds. I used to love blowing on them as a kid, seeing if I could use the force of my breath to get every last seed off the stem.

Of course, that was until my parents informed me that I was spreading weed seeds everywhere :)

they're not weeds, they're pretty!

Thank you, thank you. :D

Pretty, yes indeed they are... Beauty, though disdained...

There's a touch of Whitman in that last line. Nicely done (and good choice on the Dickinson quote btw - which poem is it?)

Thanks for reading, and for your kind words! :)

Here's the Dickinson poem for you:

"The Dandelion's pallid tube"

Awesome, thanks

I love the cadence of the rhyme in your poem, @creatr. It's just lovely!! I have read it several times. It makes me happy, the same way spring fever does. Thanks very much for your entry. And my apologies for the late response. It's Saturday -- catch-up day.

Hi, Jayna!

I'm glad you're enjoying "catch-up Saturday." :D
And, apologies are never necessary... ;)

I have to say that I could not feel more honored than to learn that I've have made you happy with my poem. Thanks so much for letting me know! :) :D
