Badugi Mistakes: Snowcatching only premiums

in #poker6 years ago

The mistake:

Snowcatching (calling against a pat hand hoping that it's a bluff) at the end of the hand only with premium three-card hands that you played aggressively at the beginning of the hand. This makes it easy to tell when you’re going to call and when you’re going to fold.

How to tell when your opponents are making this mistake:

These players will play their best three-card hands fast, especially on the first two rounds. When they lose with them, they’ll whine. You’ll never see them snowcatch with something like a three-card five, but you’ll see better three-card hands often.

How to exploit an opponent who makes this mistake:

Value bet him thoroughly when you make a hand against his obvious premiums, and in hands where he started out drawing two. Snow him when he plays more passively with one-card draws. Be sure that the hands you choose to snow with are your worst one-card draws or trash hands, because you’ll never win a showdown anyway. This player tilts a lot, so look out for spew.

Counterexploits to watch for:

Some of these players are fairly perceptive, so it’s a good idea to watch out for rebluffs in hands they’ve played passively. Because their hands start out rough, they won’t have legitimate raising hands very often. On the other hand, some of these players aren’t very perceptive, so you might see them start slowplaying their premium draws.
