Covadonga to niewielka miejscowość ukryta w górach Parku Narodowego Picos de Europa. Jest to ważne miasto dla Hiszpanów. Tutaj rozpoczęła się rekonkwista. Pod wodzą Don Pelayo w 722 roku pokonano Maurów. Bitwa była trudna, właściwie ze znikomą szansą na wygranie – muzułmańska armia otoczyła niewielki oddział hiszpański schowany w Santa Cueva (Świętej Jaskini). Mimo wszystko udało się pokonać Saracenów.
Covadonga is a small town hidden in the mountains of the Picos de Europa National Park. It is an important place for the Spanish. This is where the Reconquista began. Under the leadership of Don Pelayo, the Moors were defeated in 722. The battle was difficult, actually with a slim chance of winning - the Muslim army surrounded a small Spanish detachment hidden in Santa Cueva (Holy Cave). Nevertheless, the Saracens were defeated.
Wielu Hiszpanów uważa, że wygrać walkę udało się z pomocą Matki Boskiej. (Historia podobna do naszej Częstochowskiej, kiedy to w 1655 roku odparto atak Szwedów).
Z tego powodu powstało tutaj Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Królowej Asturii.
The Spanish believe that the battle was won with the help of the Virgin Mary. The story is similar to history of polish city Czestochowa, when the attack of the Swedes was repulsed in 1655.
This is also why the Sanctuary of Our Lady Queen of Asturias was established here.
To piękna XIX-wieczna neoromańska bazylika. Fasady kościoła wykonane zostały z różowego kamienia i marmurów pochodzących z lokalnych gór.
It is a beautiful 19th century neo-Romanesque basilica. The church's facades are made of pink stone and marbles from local mountains.
W położonej nieopodal grocie znajduje się cudowne źródło i kapliczka z figurą La Santiny (tak nazywana jest Dziewica z Covadonga).
A grotto is located nearby. There are located miraculous spring and a chapel with a statue of La Santina (this is how the Virgin of Covadonga is called).
Nazwa Covadonga pochodzi z połączenia dwóch słów: jaskinia i źródło. Chociaż isntnieje ten przekaz, że nazwa wwodzi się od Cova Dominica.
The name Covadonga comes from a combination of two words: cave and spring. Although there isnt this account that the name wwodzi from Cova Dominica.
Z Covadonga prowadzi kilka szlaków górskich do polodowcowych jezior Enol i Ercina (Lagos de Covadonga). Widoki parku narodowego Picos de Europa zapierają dech w piersiach!
