You are either with us or against us - I am sure you remember that. What people often fail to realize is that you do not need to choose a side. Then I shall stand alone, and welcome others that choose to stand with me. That is one attitude to take when ultimatums are given, problem is like you mentioned, people choose to choose a side because they believe they will benefit, or they are incapable of standing on their own.
