Hong Kong Protests Heat Up Once Again

in #politics4 years ago

The protests that had been ongoing in Hong Kong took a break for several months when the coronavirus topic became headline of the day, and restrictions on liberty around the world unfolded over the weeks.

The new 'security law' is being painted as a piece of legislation that seeks to criminalize conduct that is considered by Chinese authorities to be illegal foreign meddling, terrorist activity, and more. There is the concern that this will be a slippery slope on the way to the erosion of more freedoms.

Now that things are starting to ease up a bit, protests are back on and it has escalated to tear gas allegedly being used in the streets against those who have been demonstrating a newly proposed national security law.

It's reported that thousands of protesters once again took to the streets, angry about a new security law being threatened by Beijing.

They have expressed how they are worried about threats to the region's limited autonomy and they aren't going to take such threats lightly, we have seen this again and again in the region.

The seeming tyranny that many feel is threatening their way of life, from the proposal of this legislation, will continue to be challenged.

There are some critics who have said that protesters in the region deserve to be heard, not just have their voices silenced by harsh police measures and tear gas.

Thousands of police will reportedly be dispersed around the region to try and deal with the situation, threatening the use of water cannons if there are any further unrest issues.

Hundreds of arrests have already been made.

I was wondering if this was going to happen.

Statists gonna state. I wondered whether the COVID-19 shutdown would quell the unrest. Apparently not. Beijing doesn't want to concede anything.
