New Report Highlights Hypocrisy of California Legislators

Democrat lawmakers have voiced their support for a $15 minimum wage per hour. And lawmakers in California specifically have vowed to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour within just a few years from now.

But according to a new report it's alleged that California lawmakers might not even be paying their capitol interns.

This impacts hundreds of interns that might work at the capitol in the various offices there.

The report comes from PayYourInterns which is a nonprofit. They have found that a very small percentage of lawmakers are allegedly paying their interns even though they might preach something different about people being deserving of a certain wage minimum per hour.

  • The recent report found that in 2019 around 10 percent of California State Assembly offices paid their interns, and they found that no Senate offices paid their interns.

  • They also discovered that as of recently the state assembly offices in California and state senate offices aren't advertising any paid internships. Some didn't have any internship available at all on their websites.

The nonprofit has proposed a $3 million plan to lawmakers in that state which would bring about hundreds of jobs at $15 per hour. This also wouldn't be the first time to catch lawmakers not practicing what they preach.

I'm torn, but mostly, I'm OK with unpaid internships for congresscritters. And I'd like to cut the budget for their own pay, too. Let's not encourage people to participate in the machine.
