Gun control prevents zero deaths, no matter how severe the laws

in #politics7 years ago (edited)

Looking only at the following graph, guess when Australia enacted its National Firearms Agreement. Hint: it was in the 90's.

Were you thinking 1999? Guess again. It was in 1996.

So why do so many advocates present Australia as a success story for gun control? Because gun homicides are down, and advocates will only tell you about the statistics that support their cause. Gun control in Australia doesn't mean you are less likely to be killed; it means you are less likely to be killed with a gun.

What about the UK, also pointed out as as indication that "gun control works"? Can you tell me when a very severe piece of legislation was passed?

Hint: it was called "Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988". Does it look like it saved lives to you?

For a little extra support, here's a graph of the homicide rates for New York, Texas, and California. The challenge is to guess when Texas enacted its gun control laws.

Give up? Texas didn't enacted gun control, even as it experienced a sharper decline in homicides than California. Are you thinking about the Assault Weapons Ban? That was September 1994, a little late to the party. Maybe the Brady Bill? Nope, 1998. Did it have an affect?

Does gun control work?

Sort:

certainly gun control works.
it makes it easier and safer...
...for the killers.

Especially in places with open borders, where you can get a gun and transport it across a continent with no scrutiny.

governments that don't want their citizens to be armed.
have a reason to be afraid of their citizens.

I think someone needs to open a gun turn in stand in Las Vegas, collect a bunch of guns, no questions asked. Then that person needs to drive to Washington DC and open up a free gun stand no questions asked. No dealer licenses needed, you are not buying, and you are not selling anything. Lets get those unwanted guns to the hands of the people that want them. If they don't all go in the first day in DC, next stop Detroit.
