Many small government conservatives, anti-war independents, and even some libertarians supported Trump in the election last year, or were at least hopeful that Trump would pull the US out of some these undeclared wars we are engaged in. It seems that now many of the people that supported a more non-interventionist policy have either left or been fired from his administration. Now he wants to send more troops to Afghanistan? This all seems very odd to me.
While Americans are busy protesting for/against such things as: statues, communism, nazism, racism, free speech, and sexism. The war machine continues unabated, and with not nearly enough skepticism. I am not trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist here but WTF? We do not need to be putting our people in harms way.... Why is this not the bigger story?
So, I feel we must ask ... what are the victory conditions in Afghanistan?
- A democracy?
- A complete wipe of people who do not support western values?
- Control or destruction of the heroine trade (seems to be very easy to get these days)
- A government that is allied to us in a strategic manner (bases, airstrips, and missile silos)
- Resources (do they have any even?)
I guess what I ask myself is: What is the point? 16 yr old war with little to show for it and not shit to gain but gravitas for a president that is unpopular amongst many. Bad move ... I don't get it
