I attacked someone for arguing Trump is not racist

in #politics6 years ago (edited)

I think I'm right in doing this. And I encourage you to follow. Here's why.

I'll do it again whenever anyone - anyone - says Trump is not a racist. If you have no clue about how important this is, then I don't blame you, but I'll keep doing it because it's truly important. Yes, to the point I'll offend whoever that is. You might disagree it is worth it. But you might reconsider if you ever understand what's so important behind this.

Whenever you say trump is not a racist - he is a racist and he sets the example for others - you're encouraging racism even if it's not your intention. Do you know what happens when an american president is racist? More americans think it is okay to be racist because their president is racist. It grows socially acceptable.

The ones who hid their racism away will start doing it openly. Others who weren't racist might think it's "cool" and start doing it. Children will see it happen more often and have more chances of becoming racist in the future. What happens when enough people of a single country is racist? It becomes xenophobic as a whole.

If most of the united states starts hating everyone else, americans won't think it's bad when their military wants to use brute force on others. Why would the military want to use brute force? Because it brings profit to companies of their acquaintances.

In the richest people's opinion, enough profit justifies taking everything away from us and censoring our opinions. Then it won't matter if you think trump is racist or not. You won't even be able to mention it without being censored.

I'm not exagerating. This is what is happening in the USA, and even more so in my country, Brazil, now that Bolsonaro got elected. He's even more of a shithead than Trump, but his speech is basically the same, both as a president and as an oppresive force.

Whenever you see someone arguing in favor of an extremist, you should attack them. For the sake of our individual rights. It is in their freedom of speech to say things they shouldn't say, but you should fight it to protect your own freedom of speech, before it's taken away from you!

A lot of people here have been using the "politically correct" and "don't offend me" argument as a way to protect themselves while they instigate hate speech and other means of political propaganda, both in USA and Brazil, and that's why both presidents got elected.

We have to fight this. Stand our ground. You know there are those who would do you harm if it's profitable. But are you sure there is anyone who will defend you? I don't. So I fight.

Sort:

TBH Trump only won because Russia hacked and more people stayed home than the people who voted.

Yes, let's talk about how Russia "hacked" the election. The two major accusations against Russia are essentially that they bought some ads on facebook and that they hacked DNC servers exposing Hillary Clinton's illegal activity via wikileaks. The first is irrelevant and the second is doing the American people a favor. I agree with many of the criticisms of Trump. What bothers me is that MOST of the people so critical of Trump think Hillary Clinton is just great. Cognitive dissonance at its finest.

Incidentally, voter turnout in 2016 was 55.7% which was about 1% higher than 2012, so no, "most" people did not stay home.

Hillary Clinton

Wow. Why would you even mention hillary. I don't care about hillary, and I bet @aaliyahholt doesn't either. If you're an active trump supporter, and only if you really are, then go die in a fire, shithead.

I was responding to a comment about how Russia "hacked" the election. I was clarifying what the "hacking" allegations actually are. It happens to involve Hillary Clinton as she was one of the "victims" of such attacks and the other major party in the election in question. And I've already mentioned I'm not a Trump supporter and didn't vote for him. You do understand that the accusation here is that Trump beat Hillary because Russia "hacked" the election, right?

I am not a fan of Trump and did not vote for him though I liked his main opposition even less. I voted for someone else in the primary and for a 3rd party in the general election. My political views tend toward the libertarian so I'm rarely a fan of either the Republican or Democrat nominee. However, I have found that most (all that I have seen actually) of the accusations of racism against Trump to involve a selective interpretation of what he says or an underlying assumption that he means more than what he says. What is it specifically that has you believing that he is a racist?

While it is almost impossible to prove that someone is NOT racist, Trump has appointed a number of women and minorities to various positions. Also, there were 1.18 million legal immigrants to this country in 2016 alone of all races (a fairly typical number). Trump has done nothing in an attempt to curb this. This seems odd behavior for someone who is truly racist and xenophobic.

Again, I'm not a huge supporter of Trump or anything so you won't hurt my feelings by criticizing him, I just haven't seen the racism others have. The charge or racism is often used as an attempt to shut down political debate and that's my general perception of most of those accusations against Trump. I could be wrong though. Give me a specific quote or action that makes you see him as a racist.

The reason Trump got nominated to be the Republican candidate for president was because he had many opponents, many of whom were very much the same which split the vote of those who opposed him. The reason he won the general election was because Hillary Clinton was his opposition. I would argue that there are a very many Democrats who could have beat him but Hillary Clinton is not one of them.

There's no need to attack me, just convince me. I personally believe racism is horrible and stupid. I just don't think wanting to stop illegal immigration, for example, constitutes 'racism' (that's one of the ways I hear him being accused of being racist, not necessarily your accusation).

Also, there were 1.18 million legal immigrants to this country in 2016 alone of all races (a fairly typical number). Trump has done nothing in an attempt to curb this.

Children separated from parents at US border held in cages in Texas warehouse

I just haven't seen the racism

'Drug dealers, criminals, rapists': What Trump thinks of Mexicans

Children separated from families has little to do with Trump specifically as this has been policy in certain cases when people are detained crossing the border for many years. Obama did it too as did presidents before him so why are they not accused of being racist? It's true that Trump has separated more but on the other hand Obama detained more. The purpose is in part to avoid putting children in adult detention facilities (though there are limited family detention facilities as well). While the way in which illegal border crossers is handled (and indeed the whole immigration system) needs to be improved, neither allowing it to go unchecked nor sticking kids in adult detention facilities are realistic options. In any case, this has nothing to do with racism. Preventing illegal immigration in the first place would go a long way towards reducing those detained and/or separated. Again, allowing unchecked entry into the country for all is not a realistic option.

Your second point is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about. At no time did Trump say that ALL Mexicans (or even all illegal immigrants) are criminals, drug dealers and rapists. Although you could argue he did not go far enough to clarify only a certain percentage were (he did say he was sure some were good people or something to that effect), the implication of this headline that he thinks this about all Mexicans is complete BS. It is literally fake news and click-bait all rolled into one. His opponents assume he is speaking for all Mexicans (or whoever he is speaking about) because it fits with their existing hatred or preconceived notions of Trump but a more realistic understanding (or at least what I felt my common sense understanding at the time was) is that he is speaking of particular incidents where illegal immigrants HAVE been drug dealers, rapists and participated in other criminal behavior (murder, theft, etc). I can provide links to legitimate news stories covering those things if you are not familiar with them. The point is that you cannot prevent such people (criminals) from entering the country if you can't or won't control the border and don't know who is entering the country. Many legal immigrants come from Mexico and South American countries every year. That's not who he is talking about either. If this were about race he would want to stop all immigration from those countries, not just illegal immigration.

Trump HAS made statements of questionable accuracy (e.g. Mexico sending their least wanted across the border). This has some truth to it in that Mexico has strict anti-immigration policies itself but is happy to pass along immigrants from south of their border to the U.S. Trump has also exaggerated to some degree the amount of crime that comes from illegal immigrants, particularly major crime. However, there is a lot of petty crime that is underreported as well along border areas. But in any case, the issue is about ILLEGAL immigration and the nature of those groups in particular. It isn't about all Mexicans or all Hispanics or all immigrants from those countries. Absolutely nobody of any significance (including Trump) advocates preventing the legal immigration of more than 1 million people per year that goes on today. Nobody, including Trump, is calling them criminals. It's not an issue about race, it's about respecting the law and ensuring public safety. At the end of the day Trump can only choose how to enforce the law, he can't make the law himself. Immigration law is a function of Congress.

Here is a quote from Obama from when he was a Senator, shortly before becoming president:

“We simply cannot allow people to pour into the U.S., undetected, undocumented, unchecked and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently, lawfully to become immigrants in this country”

I will not deny that Obama says this with much more eloquence and class than Trump but at the end of the day, they are expressing the same opinion here. The only real difference is that Trump has made an actual effort (no doubt still imperfect and inadequate) to address the problem unlike most of his predecessors.

The fact is the immigration system really sucks. I don't know how it compares to other countries but I have first hand experience with it here. My late wife was a Canadian citizen and came to the U.S. on a fiancee Visa. To get that Visa was a nightmare and I would definitely go through an immigration lawyer vs. trying to do it myself should I ever be in such a situation again. The service center that processed our paperwork (the Texas service center which also processes immigrants from Mexico) lost our paperwork...twice. It took contacting the office of the U.S. Congressional representative for my district to get it straightened out. This was back in 2000 and my guess is that it has only gotten worse. So the immigration system is a nightmare that nobody is talking about fixing. It is currently completely incapable of handling the number of people crossing the border on a regular basis and ultimately it is Congress that is going to have to do something to resolve that issue, not Trump or whoever the President might be.
