People can do math. You can split the GOP and make sure Democrats always win or you can work inside the GOP to try and move it toward Libertarianism. The latter is what I decided to do after the 1996 Elections. Because after the election, I was looking at the voting results for my county. Harry Browne got exactly 1 vote in the entire county, mine. After that, I changed my Party to Republican.
