We have only one life and if we live it with mediocrity, it will be such a waste. We human beings have so much untapped potential and this world is filled with people with unfulfilled dreams and goals. This is because they have accepted mediocrity rather than aim higher, push themselves harder and go further. Do not settle for less, have the courage to be who you are meant to be. Here are 7 steps that you can take towards the best of you.
1. Raise Your Standards
If you raise your standards, you are coming out of your comfort zone, to demand more from yourself and to set higher goals and dreams than your current life situation. When you aim to live life to your fullest potential, you need to learn and grow continuously. There is a saying. “I have not come this far to go this far”. This means that in our journey of life, wherever we in this point of time, regardless of the level of your success, you cannot afford to be stagnant. You must continue to move forward. Nowhere is this more true than in the field of sports where more and more world records are broken during sporting events.
2. Cultivate the “You Can, You Will, You Must” Mentality
In life, you normally only achieve what you must have and not you should have. If you say to yourself you must lose weight instead of you should lose weight, you will be more determined and discipline to for example exercise and eat right in order to achieve your goals.
Therefore to apply the “You Can, You Will, You Must” mentality towards taking action to be the best if you ask yourself 3 simple questions.
a) Do you have the knowledge and skills to take action?
b) Are you willing to take action?
c) Are the expected outcome compelling enough for you to take action?
There is a big difference between knowing what to do and actually doing it. Therefore if you answer to all the above 3 questions is a resounding yes, you will be on fire to be the best of you irrespective of any challenges and obstacles that you may face.
3. Be Of Service To Others
I strongly believe that every individual has the capacity to be of service to others. However a lot of us are not sure where to start and how we can be of service to others. One of the simplest way to be of service to others is to be a teacher. Simply share your knowledge and teach others whatever skills you have. Know that you can make a difference and in becoming a better you, you are also making the world a better place as well.
4. Know Yourself Well
To be the best of you, you need to know yourself very well. You need to know your own strengths, weaknesses, what you are good at, what you love doing, what keeps you going, who do you admire and the list goes on. We are all unique individuals, and we all respond differently to similar situations. You need to know your own purpose and what works for you. In this way, your journey to be the best of you will be easier.
5. Keep on learning and keep on growing
There is a saying that a man is wise not because he knows a lot of things but because he knows that there are a lot more things that he doesn’t know. To be the best of you, we learn to become lifelong learners and as you learn, you will also grow. In this fast changing world, you need to learn, unlearn and relearn. This is because some of the skills and knowledge that you acquired previously have become obsolete. Therefore do actively seek out opportunities both to learn and grow.
6. Don’t Compare Yourself With Others.
In this age of social media where your friends’ activities and achievements are in full public display, it is very tempting for you to compare yourself with your friends. This is counterproductive, you either become envious of others or develop a self-inflated ego. Instead compare the present you with who you were yesterday and continuously chase after the best of you in the future. And make the best of you a target that is moving upwards.
7. Be careful Who You Mix With
You need to be very selective of the friends that you hang out with. If you hang out with a group of friends that whine, complain and wallow in self-pity, you will end up more and more like them. In most cases we make friends by default rather than actively seeking out friends who share our passion for living and are supportive. However your journey to the best of you need not be a lonely one. Seek out those who are also embarking on the same journey, support and encourage each other and the journey will be much more enjoyable. And if you make yourself of service to others, you will be in a better position to attract those positive, motivated and supportive individuals to join you.
