Do you just want to learn programming for the fun of it or do you have something in mind you want to do? Most people end up learning two languages or more. If you know what it is you want to do then you could avoid this problem and learn that language, each language is suited to different tasks. If you just want to learn then starting of with basic or python is your best bet, these languages are fairly flexible in what you can achieve. After that you could learn another language such as PHP (web) Java (Web and phones) or C++ , to name a few of the well known ones.
To learn grab a book from the library or look online there are lots of resources.
