Can someone explain curation rewards?

I've got to grips with most things on here by now I think, but I still don't really get curation rewards. My understanding, as best I have it, is that it rewards those who vote early on a post which later becomes highly upvoted, is that right?

I get that the idea is basically to encourage recognition and promotion of new content, I just don't really understand how it works, and I haven't really seen it addressed anywhere

    You got it right, but there's still 2 things more to know:

    1. Your reward is proportional to your Steem Power, so if you have little, you will receive little.
    2. To get a reward it's best to be among the first, but after the post is 30 minutes old. If you up-vote within 1 minute, you get practically nothing. The sweet spot is somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes for a good post.

      Does this only apply to upvotes on posts, or to comments also?
