Julius Nyerere, also known as "Mwalimu', or teacher in Swahili, was the first president of Tanganyika, or Tanzania as it's known today. Born to a chief of the Zanaki people, he liberated Tanzania from British rule in 1961 and was a prominent African socialist and Panafrican of the time.
