in #randomjapan6 years ago

All our past trips to Japan were F&E and we were able to utilise many different forms of transportation, like buses, ferries, rental cars, domestic flights, cycling, etc. But with a nationwide coverage of railways, travelling in Japan on trains is the fastest and most convenient.

Shinkansen 新干线

A national pride, the Shinkansen is fast, incredibly on time, and safe. Connecting major cities, it is always our choice, instead of flying domestic.

Electric tram

These trams are rapidly replaced with subways and family cars in the last few decades. Still seen in some cities and towns, the electric trams usually attracts tourists usage.

Bus fare Signboard

Not sure the exact name for this signboard, we had problems understanding how it works on our first few trips. When boarding the bus (usually from the back door), take a ticket (with a number on it) from the machine. When alighting, refer to the signboard and look for the number indicated on your ticket. The fare below it indicates the amount you need to pay.

Car rental

A typical car rental company. Our preference is always to book through tocoo.jp which offers cheap and variety of vehicles. One of the thing we observe in Japan, the cars are usually in black, grey, or white. Seldom do we see flashy colours like red, yellow or green.

How do you guys find communicating with the locals in Japan? Do you speak Japanese?

We can communicate via simple English in cities and hand gestures /body language in smaller local towns. We can’t speak Japanese but are learning. :)

You also have an advantage knowing Chinese. I think some of the characters are the same! :D

Good photo!!!

Thank you!!! :)

Yes yes yes! The electronic bus fare chart almost got me crazy the first time I took public bus during my solo trip to Tohoku. I thought that I had to count the number of stops to my destination but it didn't make any sense because it's Japan right? I don't think they would ask passengers to do math or anyhow deceive the driver which stop a passenger boarded.

Everything became clear after I asked some random passengers and realized that I didn't take the bus ticket =) So for that first bus trip I got a little 'discount' LOL

Lol! We were also quite lost during our maiden local bus ride!

ah yea the bus one confused me quite abit on my first few tries.
I haven't tried renting car yet!

Their cars on rental are super clean!!!

I think that the bus fare signboard is unique because in Singapore we tap our card by contactless means on a device provided on all buses and MRT station and we sometimes take for granted the ease of transport. Upvoted!
