WALNUTS*** Reflection Hunters Contest~Round 41

in #reflections2 years ago

In early October our walnut trees were bursting with nuts.
It was the very first time we were able to harvest so many, we picked hundreds of them, much to our delight. I eat nuts and seeds most days, they are great snacks, healthy, low in fat and full of fiber as well as vitamins.

It takes time and a great system to husk walnuts. For anyone who doesn't know about walnuts let me explain.

When walnuts are pulled from the trees they are covered with a thick green outer covering. That covering needs to be removed in order to expose the shell of the walnut. The nuts then need to be washed thoroughly, then dried out for several weeks before the flesh of the walnut can be taken from the shell.

Now in order to determine if the nut has matured enough to produce the nut, a float test must be performed. It's simple to do. Just fill a bucket with water and dump in the walnuts. The ones that float are no good, when cracked open it will be empty of the flesh that is the actual walnut.

The floaters. The reflections.

It's easy to see the float test works.

Clearly making a lovely reflection in the water.

It's a process for sure, but well worth the effort.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't, but it's sure nice to know our harvest was abundant this year and we have squirreled away so many.

With the price of walnuts @$10 dollars a pound, I am pretty sure we are in good shape in the nut department.

Very nice reflections you have here. Thanks for entering the contest! 😎

It is always my pleasure, thank you.

Oh my goodness - you need a mortgage for walnuts here in Thailand. 😆 I love how you found the reflections in your day to day.

Hello there @artemislives, the price of everything here just keeps going up, but nuts in general are expensive. We were so pleased to be able to harvest so many this year. They will make for some nice Christmas gifts.
Thanks for stopping by.

I did not know that about floating walnuts! I remember my grandparents sitting in front of the TV with nut picks picking out the nut from the shell that grandpa had cracked earlier out in his workshop.

Hello my friend, yes we have learned so much this year about walnuts. Since this was the first time the squirrels and bluejays didn't rob us blind, we had abundance. With so many I insisted we harvest and process them, I love walnuts in maple syrup poured over just about anything, but over vanilla ice cream is the bomb. Bob has already devised a shell cracking gadget. He kills me with his inventions.
I wish you well as always.

That sounds so yummy. I love walnuts.

My precious grandson was severely burned in an accident in shop class at high school and is in the burn center at the University Hospital. It has been a heartbreaking and stress filled week. They have done skin grafts and he has a long and painful recovery ahead. Life can change in the blink of an eye. The entire family is focused on Andrew. Covid rules keep visitors away, but thank goodness for texts and video calls!
