I agree with you but wouldn't limit this theory just to abusive relationships. Any relationship you have been in for a long time (romantic or platonic) is hard to change or get out of because of what you have invested into it. Not only is it painful because of a shared history with the other person, but because the thought of rebuilding from scratch with someone new just seems insurmountable. Thank you for sharing.
