God was talking to the Jews. To the Christian today, God never abandons us. But God often allows his people to experience persecution. We know that we will not be spared trouble but we know that no matter what happens to us we'll still go to Heaven. So it's a different kind of protection for the Old Testament Jew and the New Testament Christian.
