Addicted to Hope

There was a man I met in Lucca, Italy today, with no money, pilfering for someone to offer him food. He begged from table to table, but no one could say yes. Now to the contrary you might assume that someone should help him, that there are programs that should exist to take the poor in and take care of them somehow. Or, you might to the contrary believe that he will drink it away, that he had fortune and met misfortune, that he somehow gambled, drunk, and misused his life away. But for the moment, for just that moment, he need help, he needed hope. For there was nothing that mattered to him in the moment that he did yesterday, and what he might do tomorrow. In this moment, his stomach needed food, and every table he passed declined him the assistance of a moment of satisfaction. Did I help him? I decided that I will not tell you, for whether I do or do not, did it give him hope? Welcome to Italy. Welcome to America? Someone needs hope, can you give them the gift that is seldom given ?
