Making time

in #religion5 years ago

So much time has passed since I last posted, and what have I got to show for it, diddly-squat...

I’m understanding the halacha of “fixing set times for learning Torah”

Especially in our world of constant connectivity it’s so easy to become distracted by work, by Netflix, by day to day pressures

Next thing we know, the weeks gone, the years gone, life’s gone and we haven’t done what I do believe is invaluable , which is to spend time on developing your personal truth- your Torah, on study, on reflection, on meditation

Rambam puts it very strongly

Every man in Israel is obliged to study the Torah, whether he be poor or rich, whether he be physically healthy or ailing, whether he be in full vigor of youth or of great age and weakened vitality; even if he be dependent upon alms for his livelihood, or going around from door to door begging his daily bread, yea, even he who has a wife and children to support is obliged to have an appointed time for the study of the Torah, both during the day and at night, for it is said: "But thou shalt meditate therein day and night" (Joshua, 1.8.).

Everyone has something to offer and important lessons to learn and to teach, rich or poor, young or old. There is no excuse, no get out clause - this is why your here.

We need to work to live but we do not live to work

Unfortunately because we are so easily distracted we have to make an effort to find the time yo do what enriches us. This for most of us will involve scheduling a fixed time.

Like many people I rile against having to fix anything , against having another “obligation” but it seems that there is no way around discipline.

Most books on creativity specify the importance of daily practice. Its counter intuitive that creativity should have anything to do with discipline but unfortunately it does

Apparently Rambams wording is borrowed from some words of life wisdom from the Talmud

With regard to the same verse, Rava said: After departing from this world, when a person is brought to judgment for the life he lived in this world, they say to him in the order of that verse: Did you conduct business with faith? Did you designate times for Torah study? Did you engage in procreation? Did you hope for / expect salvation? Did you engage in the dialectics of wisdom or understand one matter from another? And, nevertheless, beyond all these, if the fear of the Lord is his treasure, yes, he is worthy, and if not, no, none of these accomplishments have any value.

Just that one sentence alone is material enough for a lifelong daily meditation.
