I still use a desktop and run a server at home (mostly for hobby purposes) so I do have a UPS. I'm in Florida so it isn't uncommon for an afternoon thunderstorm to cause the power to blink. You're right about the batteries. If you are lucky, you'll get a couple of years out of them. At least they are replaceable.
