How much do you know about the beatniks?
It originated in the 50s of the twentieth century in California's student circles of Columbia University. If you want to know more about this, then I recommend John Krokida's film "Kill Your Darlings".
This story is based on real events about real people. The story tells how Allen Ginsberg very strongly entered the literary beat society, which was organized by William Burroughs, Lucien Carr and Jack Kerouac.
Allen Ginsberg, student at Columbia University, embarked on this new life of drinking and socializing together with his new friends. The whole spectrum of emotions, meeting new people, the first love with Lucien Carr and betrayal are masterfully played by Daniel Radcliffe.
Do you remember Daniel Radcliffe in the role of Harry Potter? Yes, yes, the same kid, wearing glasses with two best friends and one sworn enemy? So, to understand this movie "Kill your darlings" - forget that role. Forget all the movies you watched with his participation.
At first, I could not get out of the head Daniel Radcliffe in the role of Harry Potter, and I was waiting all the time for the moment Harry would shout "Expecto patronum." But no, Harry-Daniel, as it turned out, very worthily embodied the role of Allen Ginsberg, and over time, thoughts of Harry Potter vanished in a remarkable acting game.
Charismatic Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) was the main figure among the beat generation poets. Only a few selected poets could get into his society. Having a certain magnet, luring intellect and permissiveness, Carr attracted Ginsberg to his circle of communication.
Also, we have Ben Foster in the movie, who played a drug addict, Jack Huston, who played Jack Kerouac and Michael C. Hall, who played the obsessed Lucien Carr's teacher David Kammerer.
All together, they are young people, striving against the World War II, not violently, but intellectually to change the world for the better. Trying to overcome the foundations of society, but still not knowing which way to do it.
Protests in the form of foul language, stupid antics, drugs and crime were the consequence of the desire to break prohibitions and to be free from the foundations of society. By rejecting standard American values, beatniks were a society of nihilists.
Lorenz La Fave tried to somehow systematize their tendencies and came to the conclusion that beatnik is: in the realm of religion, an adherent of Zen Buddhism; In the field of philosophy - a supporter of existentialism; In the field of art - a refutter of all accepted constructive and compositional principles; In politics - anarchist.
Modern literary critics look at the beat-generation from various perspectives: as writers-existentialists, immoral persons, romantics, apolitical people and representatives of bohemia; as a motto or symbol of the revolution of American morals. At the end of the "generation of broken" in the late 1960s, most of this group underwent a transformation into a hippy movement, some of its members joined other trends of that time.
Beatniks became the first "informal", and despite the hobbies of drugs and alcohol, despite their nihilistic views and a lifestyle of disorder, they committed a mini-revolution of public consciousness. They erased the framework of what was called the right one. It is not always necessary to live as others point out, a person is born in order to independently find oneself in this life.
Quite a lot of disturbances were in the first half of the XX century, which produced many new writers, artists, poets. At the crucial moments of history, something new is born. In each era there is a generation that will become the "New". The Beatniks were such a generation that risked the old for the sake of new.
Unforgettable atmosphere of the 50's creates music. Jazz, jazz and again jazz. A bright picture with its captivating atmosphere of that time.
This movie is intended for connoisseurs of history, for those who are interested in the birth of a new trend of beat in the late 50s of the twentieth century, which was the beginning of the generation of informal.

Love this post beloved. You are so right about trying to see "Daniel Radcliffe" beyond the epicness of the "Harry Potter" series. Yes, it was an iconic series but you just have to love when an actor can be so versatile. Keep up bringing us Gold! Yours Truly. 😍

Kill Your Darlings is a fantastic film. Your review is good, my only criticism is that you mention Ben Foster as playing a "drug addict" without mentioning that that drug addict is not just any old drug addict, he's William Burroughs, the drug addict.
I also believe that Ben Foster as William Burroughs is the stand out performance of the whole film. It really makes me wish that Krokidas would adapt Burrough's Junky with Ben Foster as the lead. I think that would be absolutely fantastic.

Not too bad a movie, my favourite thing about it is David Cross (Tobias in Arrested Development) plays Ginsberg's father in it having previously played Ginsberg himself in I'm Not There (an amazing movie where multiple actors play Bob Dylan). How many actors play a person and their father in their life?

I strongly identify, because I have always been a rebel, and I also refuse to live inside a box. I almost want to say "been there, done that", but not quite. Close, though.
