If you wanted to sit there for an hour trying to heat the connection up until it's hot enough to soften the pipe compound. I got that hair brain idea once myself, doing the exact same thing on a toilet connection you were doing. I figured I could just go half a block to the corner convenience store, save a couple bucks buying one of those lighters, half hour later I was running to the hardware store for a blow torch.
