Rhapsodist Writing Contest #6 - The Key

in #rhapsodist7 years ago (edited)

Some soft whisper woke me up, the most comforting one I had in days. The dream was beautiful almost ethereal, almost unreal. I tilted my head to the side, lazily lifted my eyelid still mesmerised by the dream I had, it must have been the weed that I had been smoking.

Its a blurry image of a pixie, with pointed ears, white dress and two pairs of wings to fit.

'What the fuck! A pixie in my room!'

I jumped out of bed, in my head, I swear I will not touch weed again. A key fell off my grasp. A funny looking one with a pink heart a the end of it. That creature with wings in still fluttering like a hummingbird in my room, looking really annoyed.

What next? Jumanji or Alice in the Wonderland? I am too old for this shit. I am 17! Please wake up.

In my bewildered state, messy hair, messed up mascara and that clumsy jump off that bed, it didn't take long before mom who was cooking downstairs started screaming at me.

'Megan, its 10.00 a.m. do I need to serve you happy meal in your room? Get your ass down here. Dad will be home any minute and we are leaving.'

How the hell did I get a pixie in my room. Wait, reality check. Mom is real, her screams are real, my messed up mascara is real, the pixie is....HOLY COW.

Now what? Mom and her maple syrup pancake waiting for me, this is nuts. Let me recall. Yes, the pixie from the dream.

'Is that you Chantel?'

She nodded furiously, her frown turned into a smile. She looks like she is talking, but the sound came out like soft chirping. Its magical and beautiful at the same time, but I fucking need to understand her.

The key, it is supposed to open a door. Let me guess, the one that leads to the kitchen where the pancakes are or the one to my wardrobe where the mess is?

'Tell me Chantel', hoping that her chirping will turn to English. She folded her arms and fluttered her wings, flew to the wardrobe door. I know I shouldn't be thinking of this but am I not supposed to brush my teeth, comb my hair and not look like a poltergeist?

No, no...lets see what is behind the door. The key fitted perfectly. I can see the same sky I saw in my dream, the blueish green aurora is still dancing in the sky and a white horse with its flowing manes looks like it is waiting for me. I hastily took a step forward and with the most alarming thud, falling straight face down, it hit the timber strip. It still smells of the lacquer dad painted a week ago. Suddenly everything vanished, I am face down staring at the floor. Mom is still yelling at me.

But WHAT THE HELL, the PINK key is hanging at the knob.

Sort:

A dream in a dream, inception.

Hmn...thats we have to find out in part 2 Drumroll...seems like a dream. But again the key exists...

As someone without an artistic or creative bone in their entire body I was a bit lost, but I read this twice and found I actually enjoyed reading it - who would have thought it!

Will see what happpens in part 2

Good stuff!

Thanks @holbein81. Not many would take a second read. Gotta capture their imagination on the first read...dang. But thanks a million buddy.
