They are already replacing informational kiosks, so the very question is: do we really need such robots for our informational kiosk?
As usual, we need to split the content from the process and the feature.
If we want a somewhat humanoid robot because of the sake for the aesthetic and the wow factor, then my answer is “yes”, we need them.
On the other hand, if we focus on the features, the meaning and the goal of the informational kiosks, then my answer is “not necessarily”.
There are already good replacements of the kiosks.
Think about Apps and websites.
When I plan a travel I look for information on websites and store it on my digital notebook for future reference.
When I visit a museum I download the related App on my smartphone and listen to the explanation there.
Going further with augmented reality: in the moment I step through the door of a museum or cross the line to a place, then my AR visor shows me informational layers such as the name of the statue and other informations, the story of the place, probably with videoclips somewhere in my vision field, and so on.
If I enter a building and I searched for a specific location before, my digital assistant project the direction to the specific room in front of my eyes without me asking.
