Adopt a Highway Hash event in San Diego

in #running17 hours ago

For people who are not from the US and have never been there you may not know what "adopt a highway" is. It is a kind of scam program that they have in America where a group gets their name put on a highway and then they, as a group, are expected to go down that highway every now and then and clean it up for the city.

It's really quite stupid and a fantastic way for cities to get free labor out of the population but whatever. This group is Hashers not Trashers and they would be picking up trash wherever they go anyway so may as well get your name on a sign for it.

I do not know these people but I don't need to, they are fellow Hash House Harriers members and I salute them for their efforts in San Diego.

When you do these projects the city provides you with trans bags and safety equipment... the rest is up to you and your group.

This wasn't a really huge undertaking and just like with the local Hash House Harriers here in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the real reason for getting together is to drink beer, socialize, and in their case in San Diego, to take advantage of a taco special.

I find it pretty remarkable that you can get anything for 69 cents anymore so that sounds like a good place to stop in my book.

These tacos were tiny little things but from what I have been told, that is the way they are supposed to be and how they are all the time in Mexico. Fair enough I guess!

The real star though and it is kind of disappointing considering how ultra-environmental California claims to be, is the sheer amount of litter that was picked up from a mere 250 meters of highway.

Now for anyone that lives in South East Asia, you probably already know that you could easily gather this much garbage from just 10-20 meters of highway but I guess I kind of expected more from Cali. I don't really get how anyone can just throw things out the window of a moving car and be ok with that.

We don't technically have a HnT chapter here in Chiang Mai, but we do regularly pick up garbage - of which there is quite a bit! - when we do runs here in Chiang Mai.

But to our Hash-pals in San Diego, we tip our hats, ant pints, to your efforts. Every little bit counts, that is for sure.

On On!
