Samsung’s S9 Hides an Ace up its Sleeve

Does the Samsung Galaxy S9 earn the astronomical price tag?

Samsung’s new flagship device has been under some controversy lately as prices for the device seem to be on the rise with the major carriers (Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T) pricing the base model at around $800 and the plus model topping over $900. Many potential buyers of the device are concerned with the price jump considering the S9 is strikingly similar to its predecessor, the S8. There is a silver lining for this price jump though, as it seems some extra attention has been paid to the durability of the device.

The first noticeable difference is the casing of the phone. Samsung has upgraded the aluminum shell to AL 7003, which should make the phone less able to be warped and bent. That is something seen in many aluminum phones, especially the iPhones. Another great protection addition is the metal trim on the outer rim of the phone. Sure it adds a .2mm in thickness, but the metal trim should make the phone hold up in drops much better than other phones without metal on the edges. This is because metal absorbs a lot more shock then the rest of the aluminum on the phone meaning the metal will take the brunt of the drop and not the glass that is much more likely to shatter from the impact. Not to worry if the glass display does take a hit though as Samsung has increased the thickness by 20%. This will make the chance of full on cracks less likely since the extra glass will make the display more durable.

The downside of all this added durability is the phone will be .2mm wider and thicker. Personally, I believe that Samsung has it wrong and that users always want a phone that is thinner and smaller. But most users more than likely will not care to go from 2.68 on the S8 to 2.70 on the S9 in width and .31 to .33 in thickness. It is important for phone manufacturers to keep a one-handed form factor, but the 2.70 width should still be plenty small enough to continue using it in one hand. The pricing will be the major concern for users looking to upgrade. It is good to see Samsung increasing its durability instead of trying to sell more protection packages.

At press time you can pre-order the Galaxy S9 for $719.99 and the Galaxy S9+ $839.99 So it appears that Amazon has some better pricing than most and will have it available March 16th.
