The first round of the Sankofa Contest that explored Proverbs from diverse cultures around the world came to a close. Some exciting entries were received.

Please read this Introduction Post to know what is Sankofa.

Ponmile's is a Yoruba Proverb that is "used to express the importance of good preparation, foresight, thinking and planning ahead." She accompanied it with the story of a farmer couple whose pro-activity saved their bright daughter's life from the regal evil plans of the queen and her princess, Olori.

Have a read here.

"The wisdom of the youths [and]... of the old [are] the core of creation of Ilé-ifè." That was the proverb sent in by @botefarm. He told a tale of the coming together of the sage of the elders and valor of the youths of Ilé-ifè, in conquest of the Òyó empire. You are right, it is a Yoruba proverb. Read the beautiful entry here.

The viscerality of the Afrikaan language was on full flaunt in a selection of idioms and proverbs sent in by @foxfiction. "Nou gaan die poppe dans!" translates literally to mean "Now the dolls will dance!" Would you imagine that meant "now there will be trouble?"

"So skaars soos ‘n tweedehandse doodskis" is used to describe something very rare, and it translates as... guess what. "As scarce as a dead coffin." Ahaha.

Visit Fox's post to have a peek at the beauty of a language rooted in Dutch.
