As Christians, we cannot divorce our social skills that are geared to meet the needs of the hungry, the homeless, the sick and the prisoners. Christ demands social awareness.
Matthew 25: 37-40
37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and sustained, or thirsty, and gave you something to drink? 38 And when we saw you outside, and we picked you up, or naked, and we covered you? 39 Or when we saw you sick, or in jail, and came to you? 40 And the King answering, he will say to them, Verily, I say to you, that as soon as you did it with one of these my younger brothers, you did it to me.
Christ commands that we have social conscience. These are the principles by which people will be judged: their treatment of those who are hungry, those who are homeless, the poor, the sick or those in prison. Interest in society cannot be divorced, biblically, from Christian walking. "He who gives to the poor lends to Jehovah, and the good he has done will be paid again" (Pr 19:17). Jesus compares our dealings with those who are in disgrace with our dealings with Him. What we do for them, we do for him. We must not allow the Christian walk to be just a spiritual enterprise, separate from service to humanity.
When we fail to meet social need, we fail to recognize the value others have, diminishing our merit in the eyes of the Lord and inviting condemnation.
This word is indeed timely. We as Christians need to always look and rich out to the less privileged around us. Because we honour God by doing so.
