Millions of people go every day to their work. Some go to disgust,
as forced to a task that does not interest them or like them. Others care
only the salary they will receive and that alone gives them encouragement to work. Others
they embody what Hannah Arendt calls the "animal laborans": the worker without further ado
horizon that the same work to which life has destined it and that it performs by inclination
natural or by custom. Above all of them in humanity is the figure
of the "homo faber", the one who works with broader perspectives, with the desire to take
forward a company or a project, sometimes looking for personal affirmation but
many others with the noble aspiration to serve others and contribute to the progress of
the society.
Christians should be among the latter, and not only in the first place
but on another level. Because if they are really Christians, they will not feel like slaves or employees,
but children of God for whom work is a vocation and a divine mission that has to be
fulfill for love and with love.
The motivation that pushes us to fight, to want to be better every day is love, and by knowing God we can give of that love.
