MyEtherWallet Scam - Watch Out!

in #scam8 years ago

These past couple of days my slack account has been continually spammed with direct messages about a so called MyEtherWallet v3. They have been directly targeting users that have joined cryptocurrency slack channels. I am in a couple of slack channels so I have received the messages a lot of times with different senders.

In the message they are stating that they pushed a drastic update to MEW. On the message it instructs you to provide your Keystore File (UTC / JSON) or simply use your private key. It then has a link which is similar domain to the domain of myetherwallet but has some letters off. You then have to follow the steps to avoid losing your funds in the wallet.

Here is a screenshot of the message:

How to avoid phishing scams like these?

Learn to Identify Suspected Phishing

  • They duplicate the images/logo of the real company.
  • They copy the name of the company, or an employee of the company
  • They make the site really visually similar to the real one

Communicate personal information only on secure web sites

  • Look for a sign that the site is secure such as a lock icon on the browser’s status bar
  • The URL should have an s which stands for secure so if the link is in http:// it might really be a scam. Always look out for the https:// on the url

Do not click on links, download files or open attachments from unknown senders.

  • If you do not know the sender don't click on the links

Beware of links in emails that ask for personal information

  • If the message ask for your personal information, think twice before giving personal information.

Hope you learned something on my post. Just always be extra careful out there.

Right, do not click links especially from suspected emails/senders. Never give out personal information to the unknown. :D

Yes you are absolutely right on that, especially that right now we are holding cryptocurrencies.

I just got one of these phishing emails. Thankfully, metamask phishing detector caught it. Watch out people!

Yes be careful out there to all. Nice might as well install metamask too. Thanks.
