As a member of the creative writing team for Antreya Studios, the game development company behind the upcoming MMORPG Antreya Chronicles, I am having so much fun. If ever someone thought that writers for games simply write the game story, let me correct you.
One of the latest tasks we had was to create the script for an upcoming trailer for the MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role-playing game). We had already determined that there would be three key languages on Antreya. I won't spoil it for you just yet by telling you what the three are, but I can inform you that the core language will obviously be the Antreyan language.
When you play the game, it will be in English for convenience. It is to be noted that while everything sounds English, they are actually speaking Antreyan in the fantasy world. This will become obvious when you come across tomes and books written in the Antreyan language.
The first taste you will receive of this foreign language will be in the upcoming trailer. Which is where the excitement comes in. Our 2d Concept Artists, Gordan Gwozdansky, put together the script for each letter in the three language alphabets, which I then in turn created Font sets for. This means that the development team can now use those language fonts in the game itself!
Wait, there's more. That wasn't what the post was about. Once the script for the trailer was written out, the team started development of the trailer visuals and sound, which left Lead Writer Dean Clark and myself with the fun task of translating the written part of the trailer into the Antreyan language. One of our wonderful female vocalists will make sure you hear the English version, don't worry.
Creating the language itself was very complex. We did not just want to throw words around. We needed to develop rules for certain words, suffixes, plurals, reflexive nouns and other rules of grammar. This was to ensure that we retained consistency throughout the language. Once we had some basic rules down, and a lexicon of the Antreyan language, the actual translation could finally begin. This was an epic task, and one which will now be utilised throughout the life of the game development and wherever the Antreyan language is to be found.
Let it never be said that the Antreyan writing team were lazy... but rather, legen... (wait for it) ...dary!!
