Call to arms

in #sci-fi4 years ago

I pulled my new chrome rat bike into the garage and killed the engine. I had perfect timing to get it before the apocalypse. I was too busy to go to any of the training sessions the other angels were doing and I was rather pleased that I got a bike I really liked this time, instead of the standard black thing my brethren were apparently given. It was a good bike, and it got attention, which was just what I wanted. I am a fallen angel, and a big reason why I went rogue in the first place was to avoid attention. That was the reason I didn't get a bike right away. I had to wait until my brethren had graduated from the school and I was the only one left, then they had to go on this big battle to save the Earth or something.

I left the bike out in the open and started back in. I didn't want to unpack and then accidentally break the rat bike, like I had done on the one before.

I got back into the house and started to arrange things as I had before. Luckily, I knew where everything was. It was only about half an hour later that things got out of control.

I was putting things away when the phone rang. I walked over to pick it up and answered it.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Hello, this is the Army National Guard calling. I received a call from an unknown number, and I was instructed that if you were to call the number, to let it continue ringing endlessly until I answered. Are you alright?" a male voice asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine. What's this about?" I asked.

"It was just a training exercise, and some of the guys made a mistake and I was stuck with this number. It would help if you would let the phone ring until you pick it up so I can complete the activation."

"United States Army. Now that's something I can get into." I hung up the phone and went to the kitchen to get a drink.

I returned to the phone, picked it up and let it ring until it went to voice-mail. I listened to the message on the tape and the guy thanked me for playing along and said the exercise was over.

I was kind of frustrated, but it was better than training. I had to hang up, so I dialed a number.

"Hello?" the voice of my brother angel answered.

"Hello, this is Lucifer. Do you have free time today?" I asked. He wasn't really my brother, and he was only a few years older than me. I was 27 and he was 30. Technically, I was older. We were in the same rank, fallen angel, but we had different angels after us. I, of course, was the bad guy, so I had to be the caretaker. I was always the one that had to clean the messes up and he was the one that created them. What kind of a life is that?

"Not really, my days of smashing things are over, and since you've been gone, things have been pretty quiet."

"You sound bored. I'll be down in a bit. I'll pick you up at the southeast corner of your house." I hung up and went to get dressed. I was wearing another outfit for the occasion, just like the one I had been wearing yesterday, and the day before that. I didn't want to over-dress so people would be shocked by the news.

While I was getting dressed, I thought that maybe I would swing by and tell my brother to put a sign on the front of his house with the phone number of a certain number he was going to call. I didn't want to ask him to do this, because I didn't want to put him in danger. I had to make sure that he was fine before I did anything.

So, I drove over and showed up at his house. I knocked on the door and it was quickly opened.

"Hi, brother." I said.

"It's good to see you, what have you been up to lately?" he asked.

"I have been living away from the whole angel thing, but I have heard that the earth is going to be destroyed soon. They're fighting to save it. The whole army of angels is going to fight some big monster from another world." I replied.

"A lot of them don't want to fight because they've never been to Earth. They don't know what the atmosphere is like or how strong the weapons the other side is using. They really don't understand the task at hand."

"Interesting," I said. "I was going to stop by and tell you to put a sign on your front yard with a number you're going to call later. I don't want you to do this. It will be dangerous. Leave me alone."

"You're not going to leave, are you? You're not leaving?" he asked.

"I have to do this, but I just don't want you to get hurt. But you know I'm right, right? You'll get hurt." He nodded.

"So, what's the number then?"

I told him to call the number with the robot voice, and he did. He kept it on speaker phone, so I didn't have to hear it ring. I just needed to hear that he had done his part. I also wished that I could've seen what was going on. Maybe this army of angels would send some sort of robot to document these things and send it back to heaven. Maybe it tapped into the televisions or something.

"Okay we're done. You can hang up now." I told him. He did and the phone was silent again.

"Drop me off at that same corner after you're done." I told him.

"Okay, where are you off to now?" he asked.

"Well, I have a new bike I want to ride, again. This time without you. These things are so much fun to drive. But the thing is, people are getting miserable about them. I just want to enjoy a bike ride for a few hours, but I don't want to deal with people. I don't want to deal with them telling me to get a job or that I'm a menace, so I got some camouflage to wear.
