I adore silence - and abhor telephones (which are just nasty little digital snitches). Catherine, have you read Anathem by Neal Stephenson? There's a brief part about a monk who is normally an articulate and gifted public speaker in front a of a polite crowd but who is rendered into a self-conscious, stuttering mess by less polite crowds armed with chirping mobile phones and other interruptions.

I think that the excess noise in today's society actually delays speech development in a lot of kids where seemingly-bright kids have limited-to-no ability to talk in sentences and vocalize more like what you might expect from infants of nine months old or less when they're closer to being three.
