Physycists found them at last: 2D magnets!

in #science7 years ago

Since the discovery of graphene back in 2004, the number of 2D materials has risen substantially. But between all these one atom thick superconductors, insulators and semiconductors, the holy grail seemed to be 2D magnets. Physicists were even beginning to think it could not be done. But at last is is here.

molecule
The 2D magnet, made of chromium tri-iodide.[1]

The great thing about 2D materials are that they make very VERY small components for electronics, optics semiconductors and water purification. Graphene, and especially graphene tubes can be used in electronics and optic devices. Batteries made with graphene components charge faster and distribute better. But I digress.

The discovery of the 2D magnets will probably influence and enhance data-storage and quantum computers. That is a far future goal for 2D materials, but for now it makes for useful experiments to test the fundamentals of the magnetic theorem.

If you want to read more about 2D materials, you should check the wiki[2], and if you want to read more of the discovery, read it on Nature[1].
