Myth About Lightning [part.4]

in #science8 years ago

Humans can carry an Electric current

If we see someone struck by lightning, many people assume that his body is still storing and can deliver an electric current. In fact, even the body of a person who has been struck by lightning from the sky does not store or be able to conduct electricity. Although lightning strikes can cause heart failure, burns and nerve damage, most victims can still survive as long as they get medical help immediately. The help includes a CPR procedure. So do not ever hesitate to immediately give help when we see someone struck by lightning.

If we are open then lay down

Trapped in the open place (fields) when a storm is crashing can be a scary thing. No wonder of course, if some people suddenly so do not know what to do, they will usually lie on their backs or down while screaming in fear. The good news is that this is actually also quite close to the best advice from experts.

Right now, the best thing about the situation is to form a position called "Lightning Crouch". The trick, squat with the legs and position the head on the knee with the palm of our hands over the ears. When lightning strikes occur in the open area, then the lightning can send an electric current as far as 30 meters on the ground surface. Of course this will be a problem for us if we are in a stomach position with the chest touching the ground. The squat position keeps us in the lowest possible position as long as we are on the ground.

Benjamin Franklin and his kite

Back to Franklin with his kite: it may never happen. The skeptical point is the lack of authentic evidence to support the Franklin experiment. There were no eyewitnesses, only a faint statement from Franklin himself. When NASA scientist Tom Tucker tried to recreate the experiment using the same material used to make the kite, he was unable to fly the object. Even if he managed to fly it, Tucker argued that it could not fly high enough to draw an electric jump from the sky.

But of course it does not necessarily make Frank's theory proves inaccurate. This could mean that the stories behind what we know about lightning and electricity in the sky today are just like their myths, like the idea that lightning does not strike more than once in the same place.

"Maybe" is the key word. Yet some people who support Franklin insist that the Franklin and kite stories are genuine and do occur, and deny that recreating the conditions / experiments creates many variables that are difficult to control, for example, the dynamics of his kite flying and how wet the material used.
