A relevant factor could be the social stability of the involved people. My theory would be that independently from the income, more stability correlates with better problem resolution and this in both ways: Higher stability comes with more stable learning curves and a person willing to learn over time enjoys more stability. This would be independent from the income and depending on the sample range in terms of income, it might be that they've by coincidence picked some socially instable individuals on the higher income end.
