Climate Change, Influenced by Humans or Just a Natural Cycle?

in #science6 years ago (edited)

When it comes to the topic of climate change, there a several scientific thesis on what's causing them. Some are convinced humanity's blame to be absolute, some that climate change is following its natural cycle only slightly accelerated by human influence.

So whether you believe humanity is the sole catalyst of climate change or just a participant, there is no denying that the problem of climate change is very much real. This last decade, world had the opportunity to witness both extremes in weather changes. From frozen Niagara Falls to melting roads in India and Australia. Usually when people tackle the topic of climate change, they often refer to averages. Average temperatures, precipitation and so on.

Now here's the kicker

As the planet Earth is becoming a warmer and warmer system with each passing year, the data we've collected during the last ~two hundred years, data on which these averages are based upon, becomes less and less relevant. Extremes in weather conditions become more frequent, more intense and can last longer than the current averages may suggest. These extremes also affect precipitation, wind, atmospheric pressure as well as other parts of the climate system like oceans.

Can we stop it?

Stop? Unlikely. But we can hinder its progress and by doing so buy time for the future generations, ones that may have access to new technologies and perhaps might just stand a chance. The fact that our own planet could become unsuitable for human life at some point in the future is a frightening thought. So much so that some people choose to shrug the entire thing under a rug, as if its going to magically sort itself out. Its safe to say; it wont. We need to start improving our waste management systems, upgrade our energy production and consumption to a more sustainable and eco-friendly levels, and of course, reduce everyone's favourite greenhouse gas emissions today. The technology for achieving above mentioned goals exists, and its being implemented. But the rate of implementation is way to slow. The oil industry as well as corporate interest based on fossil fuels just love putting their money above humanity's well being. You know what I have to say to that. Pricks.

By the time their rich asses start feeling the consequences, and when they realize no money in the world will prevent them from having to live underground, most of the world's population will be frozen and/or roasted. Take your pick. Okay that is a bit extreme. They'll actually be alive in a fucked up world that maybe could've been saved. Even worse if you ask me. It's a "maybe" we have to take.
