There are 12 hours in one hour, 12 months of the year, and 12 phases of Zodiac. Twelve is also the largest number that also has one syllable (at least in English).
As the number that comes after this "perfect", 13 looks flawed, many myths. Thus, the factors of both myth and mathematics have been combined to make this particular number often maligned over others.
The discomfort about the number, originating in ancient times, has evolved over the years to create modern fears today.
