Hello dear steemian. Hopefully everybody still health to read a science post on steemit, tonight i wanna share you some chemical ingredients of banana peel that utilized in nanotechnology and material science, lets go to the point.

Waste of the Foodstuffs

Banana is a fruit commonly known by the people as foodstuffs, it contains vitamins, nutrients, glucose, potassium, carbohydrates, magnesium etc, so the bananas have many benefits for health, most banana is yellow (include its peel color) and there several banana has purple color (peel). This plant grows traditionally or not cultivated intensively, it can grow in hot and humidity of tropical forest. Many of people only utilize the banana contents, whether it is for food or for body health, a few of them take benefit of its peel. Actually, the banana peel also contain chemicals that we can use for filtration or purification, such as water and cooking oil purification, and can also be used for composite materials CNT (Carbon Nanotube). Therefore, let we know what we can use from banana peel.

Recently, the people utilizes banana peel for animal feed as alternative way to minimize banana peel waste. From a source said the banana peel contains the tannin that can interfere with the digestion of livestock. Even thought, banana peel can be used as water purifier, composite material, and produce ethanol etc. Chemically, the banana peels contain several chemical compounds namely, cellulose (hemicellulose) galactose, rhamnosus, chlorophyll pigment and pectin (galacturonic acid). The Excess of banana peels as water purifier is it an organic substance and doesn't harm the water and it can be used several times, if it compared to other purifiers such as alum will make water be an odor. In this case we can mean the filtration is a process of raw water purification into hygiene water which healthy to drink, because the containing of pollutant metals in water can increase the water hardness and turbidity of water caused by suspended particles. There are many filtering methods can be performed such as absorption, sedimentation and filtration, and this method more cost-effective than buying activated carbon.

Several pollutants found in water commonly is heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, chromium, zinc, lead (Pb2), if the metal consumed continuously can cause the disease, because the metal is a cumulative, it means the amount of metal content will increase if it consumed continuously. Galacturonic acid can bind metallic ions strongly, it is a carboxyl sugary group. In addition, cellulose can also bind the heavy metals. Thus, the content of galacturonic acid and cellulose of banana peels can bind Chromium (Cr) that acts as a contaminant in the water. The purification with banana peel takes a long time, but the longer time of filtration process the water will be more clear.

The banana peel is not only used as water purifier but it can also be used as a composite material of Carbon Nanotube (CNT), What is CNT ? CNT is a chain bond of carbon atoms with hexagonal structure and form  silinder tube. Carbon nanotube was used in the affairs of nanotechnology, optics, electronics and in a various materials science and technology, it has a different character of other allotropes and tremendous strength, because of its exceptional thermal and mechanical conductivity properties, it was used as additive materials such as auto parts. The nanotube name comes from the length of carbon structure and the wall cavity formed by an atom (Carbon) called as Graphene. The strength of nanotube resembles the graphite (allotrope carbon) because its atomic bonds involve a carbon (C) all of orbital 2 hybrids (Sp2 atom orbital). This makes the nanotubes have tremendous strenght. Generally, CNT was made from methane, ethylene, benzene etc, or a chemical compounds that have many carbon elements. But the CNT can also be synthesized from polymer compound (organic), and banana peel waste is an organic polymer that can be utilized as CNT raw material, The banana skin contained carbon element about 59% in the form of carbohydrates that can be used as carbon source of CNT raw material manufacture. The CNT formation process requires high temperature, that is above 1000oC, because the carbon (C) can decompose at high temperature.

If we don't pay attention, we only known that banana is foodstuffs and banana peel used for animal feed, maybe we wonder why banana peel could be as water purifier or absorber and Carbon Nanotube material that can be applied in Nanotechnology. Consider Please, In the banana peel contained carbohydrate with chemical formula Cm(H2O)n or in empirical formulas is C5H10O4. Then banana peel also contained galacturonic acid with chemical formula C6H10O7, it mean inside carbohydrate and galacturonic acid contained Carbon element (C), In the past, i shared about Activated Carbon that act as absorber. Thus, the carbon atoms acting as a purifier/ absorber and carbon atoms also used as feedstock for CNT manufacturing.
