Two San Diego research institutions were named to a list of 25 "rising stars" in academic science in North America, according to a survey published by the prestigious journal Nature.
Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla reached #17 on the 2016 Nature Index of Rising Stars. Within walking distance to the north, California Institute for Biomedical Research reached #20.
The Rising Stars index looks to the future of science, identifying hot spots of growth likely to become more prominent in coming years.
No other institutions in Southern California made the list. Two in Northern California were listed, first-ranked Stanford University and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, rated #17.
About 8,000 institutions worldwide are measured, said Richard Hughes, publisher of the Nature Index, by email. The index covers only the natural sciences, divided into four broad subject areas: life sciences, physical sciences, chemistry, and earth and environmental sciences
The index ranks institutions globally and regionally based on their growth in publishing scientific research in quality journals. As such, it is not an indication of absolute output in quality publications, which is covered in another index.
Four calendar years are covered in the 2016 index, from 2012 to 2105 inclusive. The weighted contributions of each author in publications are used to derive a numerical score for the entire institution. The increase in that score determine the ranking.
